Benefits of Bone Broth
What is bone broth?
It’s a clear, protein, rich broth, which results from simmering meaty bones for a long period of time. Just like a stock, you can use it as a base for soups, stews or risottos.
Why is it so popular?
Bone broth is associated with collagen, which is a structural protein found in skin, cartilage and bone. When the bones are cooked over a long period of time, the collagen in the connective tissue is broken down into gelatine, and that provides benefits to skin, i.e. the appearance of wrinkles, and to bone mineral density, especially in postmenopausal women. Collagen is also effective at improving pain, stiffness and joint function in those suffering with osteoarthritis.
Can bone broth improve gut health?
With gut health such a prominent focus in terms of overall health and well-being, including mental well-being it’s no wonder we are looking at dietary ways to support. Gelatine, which is the most abundant protein in bone broth binds with water to support the healthy movement of food through the intestines. Some studies suggest that gelatine alongside other amino acids such as glutamine, found in bone broth may have therapeutic potential in inflammatory bowel disease. Furthermore, some of those amino acids associated with bone broth have also been shown to support the intestinal barrier and increase intestinal immunity.
Is bone broth safe for everyone?
If you are sensitive to foods high in levels of histamine, then you may want to cook your bone broth for a shorter period of time and this can be done in an electric pressure cooker such as an Instant Pot. To find my Instant Pot bone broth recipe, which cooks in 120 minutes click here.
